2024 Septuagint Summer Course

The Septuagint and Law

With the translation of the Torah from Hebrew into Greek, Greek-speaking Jewish communities could now reflect on the applicability and reach of this version of Sacred Law. Our course proposes to deal with two questions:

  • What range of translational approaches were taken to produce a Greek version of the Torah, and what did it communicate as legal document?

Greek legal sources in circulation at the time of translating the Pentateuch will be read and explored alongside the Septuagint’s use of legal terminology.

  • What do we know about the conception of “Law” held by Greek-speaking Jewish communities?

We plan to study the theological value, reception and implementation of Jewish law in Greek during the Hellenistic Period.
